Challenge
Clinching is the cold joining process in which sheet metals are connected by force and positive locking with each other in washing machine drum production. The geometry of dies is one of the critical parameters in this kind of cold joining process and defines the quality of performance for stamping process in metal sheet forming. Arcelik needed to improve the clinch performance to decrease failures during manufacturing and, thus save time and cost.
FormPlanet test bed solution
Advanced mechanical characterisation tests of the sheet metals were performed to examine the mechanical behaviour of the drum material. Tests included standard tensile tests, the Nakajima test and miniaturised tensile tests to extract mechanical properties such as yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, uniform elongation, or total plastic elongation after failure. The knowledge on mechanical behaviour allowed the company to strengthen the clinching joints.
