Conventional microstructural and mechanical characterisation tests were unable to provide a complete understanding of the performance of cold rolled steels in fine cutting operations. Arania needed to assess accurately the behaviour of the C45 steel grade for fine blanking operations to improve their manufacturing.
FormPlanet test bed solution
FormPlanet used a non-standardised test to assess Fracture Toughness based on the Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) methodology to discriminate materials with adequate behaviour in fine blanking applications from materials with inadequate behaviour due to the presence of defects. The test was sensible to determine material behaviour differences in fine blanking operations.
